Texas Trumpet Competition 2021
Welcome to the inaugural Texas Trumpet Competition! Trumpet students from across Texas are invited to submit video entries. There are three divisions in which to compete - Middle School (Grades 7/8), Underclass (Grades 9/10), and Upperclass (Grades 11/12). Each division will host a solo competition and a trumpet etude competition. More information on each division can be found below. Video entries will be accepted now - May 15, 2021.
This first year will not be a traditional competition format with prize-winners named as the COVID-19 Pandemic continues to be a health and safety concern. It is our hope that as things begin to get back to normal, we will be able to host a traditional "competition" in 2022. This year, students may submit a video of a solo piece of their choosing, likely something they are working on for their own solo & ensemble competition via their individual ISD, and will received detailed feedback from Dr. Benjamin Fairfield, Principal Trumpet of the Abilene Philharmonic and Co-Principal Trumpet of the Midland-Odessa Symphony. This will give students an additional chance to perform the solo piece on which they are working and receive feedback from a professional trumpet player, educator, and a frequent adjudicator of high school auditions and solo competitions. Students may also submit a video of an etude from the division list and receive feedback in the same manner from Dr. Fairfield. There will be no limit on the number of videos students may submit. If students would like to submit a video of their solo (or solos) as well as one or more of the etudes, they are welcome to do so. Each video submission will cost $20 and will include detailed feedback and specific practice suggestions as well as general practice material recommendations.
What you will receive with your paid Texas Trumpet Competition 2021 video submission:
1. Detailed feedback/comments on your performance from Dr. Fairfield
2. Specific practice material suggestions with a brief sample on building a practice routine
3. All-State Audition preparation ideas for spring/summer practice
4. A comprehensive list of "skills" necessary for successful trumpet performance and how you can use a ranked list of these skills to help you be more productive in your practicing
